Manner Adverbs and Information Structure: Evidence from the Adverbial Modification of Verbs of Creation 1 Regine Eckardt

چکیده
The paper investigates the pragmatic effects of word order variation in German, specifically concerning the ordering of adverb and nominal arguments. The behaviour of verbs of creation in combination with adverbs and indefinite object NPs proves that the allegedly neutral word order NP Adverb Verb is not really presupposition free. I claim that indefinite object NPs to the left of manner adverbs receive a special kind of partitive reading which presupposes that the referent of NP is already contextually present before the reported event takes place. This will offer an explanation for the fact that in a sentence like Bob hat ein Flugzeug stabil konstruiert (‘Bob has a plane solidly constructed’) the object NP cannot receive an existential (indefinite) reading while the sentence Bob hat ein Flugzeug kunstvoll bemalt (‘Bob has a plane artistically painted’) seems to be able to refer to a previously unmentioned plane.

Adverbs and Light Verbs
Chinese allows manner and degree adverbs to occur further to the left than is possible in English and other languages; compare Amanda will (*loudly) be (loudly) greeting her guests (loudly) with Lisi (qingqingde) ba zhuozi (qingqingde) qiao-le yixia “Lisi lightly knocked once on the table,” with the manner adverbial to the left of BA. It is proposed here that this results from the two languages...
متن کاملArguments for Pseudo-Resultative Predicates∗†
This paper addresses the compositionality puzzle presented by a class of ‘pseudo-resultative’ predicates, such as tight in the sentence She braided her hair tight. The analysis proposed reveals that the modification involved also provides insight into the nature of the lexical roots of verbs and their role in compositional semantics. Pseudo-resultative predicates superficially resemble resultat...
متن کاملL1 Transfer in L2 Acquisition of the There-Insertion Construction by Mandarin EFL Learners
This study examined the role of the native language (L1) transfer in a non-native language (L2) acquisition of the there-insertion construction at the syntax-semantics interface. Specifically, the study investigated if Mandarin EFL learners would make overgeneralization errors in the situation where an L1 argument structure constitutes a superset of its L2 counterpart. Verbs of existence and ap...
متن کاملIntroduction: Evidence from Evidentials
The collection of papers in the present volume represents the convergence of two research communities who had the common goal of exploring the formal basis of evidentiality. In the fall of 2007, a research seminar focusing on the cross-linguistic typology of evidentials was held at UBC. In the spring of 2008, GLOW hosted a workshop on the semantics evidentials whose broad goal of the workshop w...
متن کاملSlowly but Surely: Adverbs Support Verb Learning in 2-Year-Olds.
To acquire the meanings of verbs, toddlers make use of the surrounding linguistic information. For example, two-year-olds successfully acquire novel transitive verbs that appear in semantically rich frames containing content nouns ("The boy is gonna pilk a balloon"). But, they have difficulty with pronominal frames ("He is gonna pilk it") (Arunachalam & Waxman, 2010). We hypothesized that adver...
